The first step to stopping back pain, is to turn off the pain.
The way to do this is by manipulating the body’s nervous systems. The body has two nervous systems which are responsible for driving our reaction to life. There is the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares us to either fight or flight, and there is the parasympathetic nervous system which returns us back to a normal resting state.
This is also the nervous system that helps us to relax and switch off.
Pain is a sympathetic nervous system response, therefore when you are in pain your sympathetic nervous system is switched on. The interesting aspect of these nervous systems is that they cannot both work together, so they act like a see-saw with one suppressing the other. Therefore, one of the most effective ways to reduce pain, and then switch it off is to focus on stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, when you do this it switches off the neural mechanics of pain.
One of the most effective ways of doing this is by taking slow deep breathes from your stomach, this is termed diaphragmatic breathing. When you do this it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, switching off your pain.
